Let's Stop Poisoning Our Kids! *and ourselves
Being a parent, we do everything we can to protect our children's health and well-being, right? Of course we do. We feed them nutritious food, make sure they get fresh air and exercise, tell them to look both ways before crossing the street, and protect them from well-known hazards such as burns, electrical shocks, falls, and choking. But there is another hazard you may not even be aware of: Toxic Chemicals that are in your own home!

Unfortunately you could be poisoning your family without even realizing it. If you are not sure, just take a look at the labels on your cleaners. If you see warnings to contact a poison information center immediately if solutions are swallowed - or even, in some cases, come in contact with skin - then you will see what we mean.
Statistics can give cause for concern:
- Hundreds of children suffer from autism
- Learning problems have increased
- There is an epidemic of asthma
- Eczema is rampant
- And more young adults are developing illnesses like breast cancer and Parkinson's disease
Could these be linked to the tiny daily doses of pesticides, plasticizers and pollutants to which we are all exposed?
Over the past 50 years, we repeatedly learned the harsh lesson that traces of chemicals can cause devastating effects on the environment...and to our health (e.g. the health destroying effects of tobacco smoke; the brain withering effects of lead in gasoline and paint; the epidemic of skin cancer caused by the hole in our ozone layer.)
It's alarming but true - scientists and doctors have discovered that there is a connection between our health and the use of common everyday household chemicals. Unprecedented exposure to chemical contaminants, pollution, toxic products and stress has increased unhealthy conditions, from arthritis and cancer to heart disease, and even the symptoms of aging. If yours is the typical home, you probably use dozens of cleaning and personal care products, purchased at the local grocery store, which contain chemical ingredients that could be harmful to your health and the health of your loved ones.

After all, we have laws to protect our health and safety, don't we? Actually the government has very limited power to regulate manufacturers, or require testing of their products!
Here are some disturbing facts:
- A product that kills 50% of lab animals through ingestion or inhalation can still receive the federal regulatory designation "non-toxic" Dr. Doris Rapp "Is This Your Child's World?"
- Of the 17,000 chemicals that appear in common household products, only 30% have been adequately tested for their negative effects on our health; less than 10% have been tested for their effect on the nervous system; and nothing is known about the combined effects of these chemicals when mixed within our bodies. Many of these products also give off noxious vapors through their containers. Even before you've opened the container! If you doubt this, simply walk down the cleaning aisle at your local grocery store and notice how strongly it smells of toxic vapors even though all the containers are sealed tight. This is why you would not reuse a bleach container for water storage. The product infiltrates the container, leaving it permanently toxic to anyone who uses it. Moreover, you and every family member will eventually come into contact with these chemicals as residual product remains on surfaces after use - and often, necessarily for them to have their effect. Consider what this means if you work at home with children.
How many accidents suffered by children are caused by chemicals in dangerous home cleaners? Each year, over 1 million children are accidentally poisoned in their homes. 250,000 of these victims are hospitalized. 3,000 children will end up in intensive care. Dozens more will die. Thousands of children and adults are permanently disfigured or injured through contact with chemicals in the home each year. The amazing fact is the most common substance to poison children is a household cleaner. Many of these products are considered safe!
Think of your own home - you probably have dozens of bottles of cleaners, containing hundreds of chemicals. Could an accident happen in your home? We don't want to scare you but check it out for yourself.
Harsh chemicals are not people. They are not innocent until proven guilty. In fact, it is just the opposite...they must be proven safe before they are allowed in our food, air and water. Yet over 90% of industrial chemicals have never been tested for their effect on the developing brain and immune system!
And as each day goes by, it becomes more and more clear that it is impossible to have healthy children in an unhealthy world. It's no secret that today's children are born into a toxic world - the question is: can their little bodies cope?
Children are more vulnerable to toxins for two reasons:
1. Like new plants, their young brains and bodies are more fragile, more sensitive to damage.
2. Pound per pound, children eat/drink/breath more chemicals than adults (they constantly put objects in their mouths and they inhale twice as much air; eat 5 times more grapes and drink 15 times more apple juice than adults).
Pollution in the home does not have to be making you sick. Ever thought why people get migraines, asthmas, chronic fatigue, etc. etc. - the list is endless. Maybe just by removing the Harsh Chemicals from your home you will notice a substantial difference. It's worth a go. Children are born pure and natural - it's our duty, collectively, to make sure we do our utmost to ensure a longer and healthy future for them and the environment they will grow up in.
